Ariane Smith Machín, PhD.
Doctor of Psychology

Practice Philosophy
Dr. Machín believes in the importance of participating in growth-fostering relationships. This way of connecting allows Dr. Machín and the client to work together in an authentic way to explore and be curious about various apects of one’s life, while promoting empowerment, resilience, and strength. Dr. Machín also likes to use humor, creativity, and flexibility in her work, as she believes this allows greater freedom to explore and impact one’s level of self-awareness and acceptance. Overall, Dr. Machín enjoys spending time with clients and works to meet clients where they are at, while collaboratively finding the best treatment approach.

Areas of Expertise

Dr. Machín has worked extensively with individuals experiencing body image and disordered eating patterns. She also believes that one does not need to have a ‘diagnosable’ eating disorder to need support, rather, eating/body attitudes and behaviors lie on a continuum. One does not have to feel guilty or bad about these overwhelming thoughts or behaviors as they are actually quite common, especially in our changing and powerful socio-cultural climate. In their time together, Dr. Machín and the client will explore potential patterns, emotions, messages, and experiences, with the hope of moving in a positive direction of self-empowerment, mindfulness, and growth.

Dr. Machín has worked a great deal with the athlete population, including college athletes and coaches, and elite club level teams and parents. She works with athletes on performance enhancement issues, such as anxiety management, motivation, distraction control, concentration, arousal management, relaxation, stress, burnout, injury, communication and coping. She is passionate about helping other athletes reach their goals and gain a sense of empowerment, both in and out of sport.
